It has been a long wait, but the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG) is ready to re-open to the public.
In accordance with Government of Alberta health and safety protocols, facility operations will look a little different this year.
The biggest new change is that they are moving to ticketed admission to ensure there are no more than 50 visitors in the MAG at once. This will help visitors maintain social distancing. The MAG galleries are free to visit.
The team at the museum has made many changes including enhanced cleaning protocols, putting out hand sanitizing stations, and posting helpful signage because the safety of visitors and staff is our top priority. There is also one-way traffic flow, reduced visitor capacity, and social distancing measures in effect throughout the museum.
Visitors can enjoy a new temporary art exhibit, plus some display changes and a community exhibit in Remarkable Red Deer: Stories from the Heart of the Parkland. The exhibition Shore Figures: Sylvan Lake by Benalto artist Dave More will be on display at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG) July 2, 2020 to September 5, 2020. The Community Wall in Remarkable Red Deer will display the community-focused exhibit COVID-19: Unprecedented Times, on display starting July 2.
“We are looking forward to welcoming our visitors back into the building,” says Lorna Johnson, Executive Director. “We have taken the preventive precautions recommended by AHS to keep visitors and staff safe.
" We hope you will enjoy some of the changes we have made to our permanent exhibit, as well as the Shore Figures: Sylvan Lake paintings by Dave More. We plan to resume more of our regular programs in September. Until then, please check out our blog and Facebook posts. We hope to see you soon.”
About Shore Figures: Sylvan Lake: Our neighbour to the West, Sylvan Lake, has long been a magnet for Albertans and other visitors to its long sandy beach. In this exhibit noted artist, Dave More, has captured the essence of the crowds that are attracted to this beautiful shoreline through a series of large colourful paintings. It is easy to imagine you are one in this sea of colour, noise and smells that is Sylvan Lake in the summer.
About COVID-19: Unprecedented Times. The MAG would like to recognize the citizens of Red Deer who are weathering this storm. The objects on display are from the RDMAG’s collection. They represent some of the many workers, and activities that took place, in our community. The artifacts are old. The photos and stories are current. On display are the COVID-19 related stories of Troubled Monk, Curtis Wazny, Christine Engel, Marnie Blair and Erin Boake.
The staff at the museum wants to thank residents for their ongoing patience and support as they continue to work through this process. As the health and safety regulations change, the facility will assess and revise our operations to the best of our abilities.
The MAG will open on Thursday, July 2 and will have reduced hours, open Monday through Friday from 10 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
Free timed-entry tickets can be booked in advance online at www.reddeermuseum.com.
